Ledger.com/start — Securely set up your Ledger hardware wallet

This guide walks you step-by-step through unboxing, installing Ledger Live, initializing your Ledger device, and applying recommended security practices so you can manage your cryptocurrency with confidence.

Quick checklist

  • Verify package integrity and authenticity on arrival
  • Install Ledger Live from the official site
  • Initialize device, set PIN, and write down recovery phrase
  • Confirm transactions on your device only

Unboxing & authenticity

When your Ledger device arrives, check the package for tamper-evident seals and verify authenticity. Ledger packages include the device, a USB cable, recovery sheets, and quick-start materials. If anything looks altered or missing, contact official support immediately.

Do not use a device that arrived pre-initialized or that asks you to enter a recovery phrase during first boot — a legitimate Ledger will guide you to create one yourself.

Install Ledger Live

Download Ledger Live from the official Ledger website and install the desktop or mobile app. Ledger Live is the app that lets you add accounts, view balances, send/receive assets, and access partner services like buys, swaps, and staking.

Only install Ledger Live from the canonical site. Avoid third-party mirrors or links you received via email or social media.

Initialize your Ledger device

Connect the device to your computer or phone and follow the Ledger Live prompts. You’ll be asked to create a PIN—choose a unique numeric code you can remember but won't be easily guessed. The device will then generate your recovery phrase (24 words). Write these words down on the supplied recovery sheet in the exact order shown.

Store the recovery sheet offline in a safe place. Do not photograph, screenshot, or save it digitally. With your recovery phrase anyone can restore your funds—treat it like gold.

Using Ledger Live & day-to-day operations

Once initialized, add accounts for the cryptocurrencies you want to manage. Ledger Live gives you a unified portfolio view and requires device confirmation for every outgoing transaction. This ensures that even if your computer is compromised, transactions cannot be authorized without the physical device.

Use Ledger Live to check real-time balances, export transaction history for accounting, and access third-party integrations (DeFi, NFT marketplaces) while keeping your private keys secured on the Ledger.

Integrations & Web3 access

Ledger supports secure connections to many third-party wallets and decentralized applications. When connecting to external services, verify the URL, prefer well-known partners, and ensure you only approve actions shown on your device screen. Approve transactions only after you have verified the recipient address and amounts on the device display.

Security best practices

Follow these practices to maintain strong security:

  • Never share your recovery phrase. Ledger will never ask for it.
  • Keep your recovery phrase offline and split backups if desired for redundancy.
  • Use a unique PIN and consider an additional passphrase for advanced users.
  • Always verify transaction details on the device screen before approving.
  • Update firmware and Ledger Live only via official channels.

Lost device & recovery

If your device is lost or damaged, don’t panic—your recovery phrase allows you to restore access to your funds onto a new Ledger device or compatible wallet. Perform recovery only on trusted hardware and follow the official Ledger restore flow.
